The organizers have confirmed that 32 teams have been duly registered to participate in the 9th edition of the Obafemi & HID Awolowo Memorial Kids Cup.
The annual tournament is sponsored by the President Awolowo Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu Memorial Foundation and organized by the National Youth Soccer Organization.
The Secretary General of the National Youth Football Organization, Ganiu Aliu, told sports247.ng that the competition is being sponsored to mark the 114th anniversary of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s posthumous birthday and also to discover young talents at a tender age.
Aliu revealed that 16 teams would participate in the Boys Under-10 and Women’s Under-17 category, saying that all the teams were selected from the southwest zone.
“We have more than enough teams that want to participate in this competition, but we narrow it down to 16 teams in each category so that we finish the tournament within a month,” he said.
Aliu also said that the competition would start on February 5, 2023 at Apogbon Sports Center, while the final ceremony would take place on March 6 at Abati Barracks Football Ground, Ojuelegba, Surulere.
However, he urged participants to be good ambassadors for their clubs and avoid football hooliganism that can tarnish the image of the competition.
