An Awka-based Anambra High Court on Tuesday awarded compensation of 10 million Naira against a Deputy Inspector General of Police, in charge of Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Abutu Yaro, for illegally detaining Mr. Chukwuemeka Ekwueme, a property developer.

Judge DA Onyefulu, who delivered the judgment, also awarded the sum of N200,000 as litigation costs in favor of the plaintiff.

His Honor also issued an injunction prohibiting the police from arresting, detaining, harassing or intimidating the plaintiff for the same matter, but from pursuing the charges against him.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Alex Ejesieme, had filed a lawsuit pursuant to the fundamental human rights action against Yaro and others in Trial no. °: A/Misc 461/2022 for the arrest and detention of Ekwueme by the ZHQ Police between December 14 and December. 28

Other defendants in the lawsuit included the area’s Public Relations officer, Nkiru Nwode, and a certain Emmanuel Awah from the PRO’a office.

Ejesieme said that Ekwueme, CEO of S. Bigman Multi Biz Concept, a real estate company, was arrested and detained in connection with his move to develop land at Oba International Airport, Idemili South Local Government Area.

He said the police arrested him based on a community request, but held him without trial since December 14, a situation he described as “draconian surveillance.”

Recall that the same court had ordered on December 28, 2022 the immediate release of the plaintiff after a request for bail from Ejesieme.
