Akwa United head coach Deji Ayeni believes his team will bounce back in time from their 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League opening day loss against Bendel Insurance on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers were beaten 2-0 by the newcomers in front of their fans at the Nest of Champions, with two first-half goals from Benin Arsenal doing the damage.

“I am a very positive person and I believe that nothing is impossible. Soccer is a game in which you win, lose or draw. We have found ourselves on the losing end this time, and next time we may find ourselves on the winning end. So, losing this game is not the end or anything that can worry us, although it is very painful as a coach who has trained the players for several months. We will be back, and I think we can bounce back in a bigger way,” Ayeni said.

Ayeni took charge of Akwa United in the middle of last season, following the resignation of Kennedy Boboye.

He saw the former champions finish in ninth place in the table and was given a head start ahead of the new campaign, which saw the club add 29 new players and the departure of several others.

“Regarding the signing, many players left the team, but that’s not the yardstick to measure the result because if you look at the guys who played, they played very well, especially in the second half.
