Iwobi was in the Everton squad that faced Manchester United in their FA Cup third round match at Old Trafford on Friday night.

The Nigerian international started the game and finished the first half unscathed. However, six minutes into the second half, Iwobi was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after injuring his ankle following a strong challenge from United’s left-back Tyler Malacia.

The injury appeared serious, as the Nigerian appeared to have sprained his ankle after Malacia’s tackle. Iwobi also seemed to know the extent of the damage after covering his eyes with his shirt as he was carried off the pitch.

After the match, it was confirmed that Iwobi suffered an ankle ligament injury and the Nigerian left Old Trafford on crutches.

However, Everton manager Frank Lampard hopes the injury is not as serious as it seems, saying the former Arsenal star will undergo a further scan.

If Iwobi gets the worst possible result, the Nigerian international could miss the rest of the season and Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March.

Iwobi’s injury appeared to affect the Toffees in the game as they conceded immediately after he was withdrawn courtesy of a Connor Coady own goal.

Antony Lopes had put United ahead within the first four minutes, but Coady took advantage of a touch from David De Gea to equalize Everton.

However, the man on loan from Wolves went from hero to nil when he directed a Marcus Rashford cross into his net. Rashford then sealed the victory with a goal in the seventh minute of added time.
