Some as-yet-unidentified thugs have burned down the Umuchu Police Station, along Umuchu-Achina Road, in the Aguata local government area of Anambra state.

The sources said that the thugs broke into the venue around 3 am on Sunday and set the premises on fire.

PUNCH Subway deduced that the station was recently renovated by members of the Umuchu Progressive Union, as it was destroyed during the #EndSARS protest in 2020.

The station was vacated after it was attacked in 2020 and there were no police officers on duty at the time of Sunday’s attack.

Umuchu Progressive Union Chairman General Charles Ezeabasili said: “This is discouraging and unfortunate. While the UIU has upgraded the facilities at the police station and awaited the return of police personnel, the thugs are busy destroying, demolishing and burning the facilities intended for our own good. How do we progress?

State police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident.

“The police station was still undergoing renovations when the thugs arrived early Sunday morning and set it on fire. The situation is under control and calm has returned to the area. We want to take this opportunity to reach out to people in the community to help police with information about the ongoing investigation,” Ikenga added.
