The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a six-man robbery gang terrorizing the Nkpor/Ogidi communities of Anambra State.

Security officers arrested the thieves during a surveillance patrol along the Ogidi/Eke-Nkpor highway on Wednesday night.

A statement from the commando’s spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, indicated that two pump-action automatic pistols, six live cartridges, a black Toyota Camry suspected of being hijacked, and an ashes-filled Toyota Corolla vehicle were recovered from the gang.

Ikenga gave the names of the arrested suspects as Innocent Ifeanyi, a 29-year-old man; Nweze Chiderah, a 33-year-old man; Igwe Emmanuel, male, 20 years old; Kelechi Ani, male, 35 years old; Chidera Nwaobodo, male, 23 years old; and Emeka Onuoha, male, 30 years old.

He said the suspects were about to escape the scene after a robbery and carjacking operation before being taken into custody.

Ikenga also added that earlier in the day, police officers acting on credible information in Ogidi also arrested Emmanuel Nwosu, male, 48; Francis Obiano, male, 28 years oldb; and John Philip, male, 31 years old and recovered a van belonging to Dangote Group Limited.

It said the truck had previously been reported to have been hijacked at gunpoint on Owerri Road, Ogidi, Onitsha on Monday.

“Security officers engaged the armed robbers in a gun duel and due to the superior power of the weapons and serious pursuit by the police, the robbers were later arrested with gunshot wounds.

“All of the suspects have confessed to the crime and are assisting police with more information to guide arresting other gang members and recovering other stolen items.

“Further details will be communicated as investigations are still ongoing,” Ikenga added.
