Mayowa Ayomide, of the Mayor Boxing club, won his first “boxer of the day” award on Saturday based on his impressive performance at the 125th edition of the Monthly Saturday Boxing Show.

The show was held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Hall, Rowe Park, Yaba.

Ayomide was voted the best boxer by the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association Referees and Judges out of 20 boxers who fought in ten bouts.

Ayomide, fighting in the red corner for Owonikoko Boxing Club, outpointed Dangote Boxing Club’s Azeez Islamiat to a unanimous 5-0 victory of the ringside judges in the women’s 44kg category.

The exciting teenager has now set her sights on representing and medaling for Nigeria in the future and hopes to be on the plane to Brazzaville, Congo for the African Youth Games in April.

In other bouts, Boxing Temple’s Samuel Dahunsi lost to Ajetunmobi Boxing Club’s Abuwon Farouq in the 48kg weight class by majority decision 4-1 in the first bout of the day.

In the 54kg contest, Mayor Boxing Club’s Musefu Quam in the blue corner defeated Fighter Boxing Club’s Oyebamiji Quadri by a 3-2 split decision, while Dangote Boxing Club’s Adebayo Jelili defeated Gladiators Boxing Club’s Olumide Adebiyi. in the 64 kg category.
