2023 presidential election: G5 governors meet

Before the rally scheduled for Thursday, January 5, the G5 governors reportedly held a meeting on Wednesday night to consider the emerging reality.

The governors were said to have conceded that local political realities in different states may make it impossible for Integrity Group members to endorse a single presidential candidate.

The Nigerian Tribune stated that their findings showed that Governors Wike and Makinde are not leaning towards Labor Party candidate Peter Obi, contrary to earlier speculation that they may back the banner-bearer backed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Also, both Okezie and Ikpeazu have reportedly decided to keep their preferred candidates on their chests for now.

Meanwhile, Governor Ortom has made no secret of his support for Obi as he backed Obasanjo for endorsing the former Anambra state governor.

What the G5 governors decided to do, reveals source

A source quoted by the Nigerian Tribune said the aim of Wednesday’s meeting was for the aggrieved PDP governors to encourage each other to take a position that is consistent with the political reality of their state so as not to jeopardize their personal ambitions.

It was concluded that the Ibadan meeting would produce a common position allowing governors to stick to their individual preferences.

The source said that Wike and Makinde will be able to openly seek support for their choice whenever they choose to come out with their position.

As for Ikpeazu and Uguanyi, who have yet to indicate their preferred candidates, the meeting reportedly resolved to encourage them to quietly back their choice in case it is not the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The governors are expected to continue to manage the situation as they would not want to create the perception of a rift within their ranks.

“Then they will continue to manage the peculiar circumstances because they don’t want to be divided. They don’t want the division to spill over,” the quoted source said.
