Novak Djokovic has clinched his tenth Australian Open title after a 6-3, 7-6(4) 7-6(5) victory over the first-time Australian Open finalist. Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday.

Djokovic, who was unable to participate in last year’s Australian Open after being deported due to COVID-19 vaccination issues, came back strong this time and swept every opponent he faced before winning the historic title.

While this is Djokovic’s 10th Australian Open title, it is also his 22nd Grand Slam which has seen him equal Rafael Nadal at the top of the men’s historical classification.

Despite an initial injury scare, Djokovic left no doubt that he meant business at the year’s opening Grand Slam tournament, having only dropped one set in the entire tournament.

legendary status

Djokovic’s status in Australia is unrivaled, with the 35-year-old winning his 28th straight Australian Open match and 41st straight across the country.

Speaking after his win, Djokovic described Sunday’s win as the biggest victory of his life, considering the circumstances.

He said: “’This has been one of the most difficult tournaments, considering the circumstances. I didn’t play last year and I’ll be back this year,’ Djokovic said as he addressed fans at Rod Laver Arena after receiving the trophy.

‘I want to thank all the people who made me feel comfortable.

“There’s a reason I’ve been playing my best tennis here.”

‘Only the team and the family know what we’ve been through. I would say this is the biggest victory of my life, considering the circumstances.’

Crying uncontrollably while celebrating, Djokovic also regained the world number one ranking from Carlos Alcaraz.
