The Department of State Services arrested the New People’s Party of Nigeria’s Kano State gubernatorial candidate, Abba Yusuf.
Yusuf was said to have been arrested on the order of DSS Director General Aisha Bichi’s wife, following a confrontation between the duo outside the lounge gate of Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday night.
The gubernatorial candidate’s convoy was said to have caused a traffic jam that prevented Bichi’s convoy from accessing the VIP lounge.
In a move to clear the ensuing traffic jam, there was an altercation between DSS agents and the gubernatorial candidate’s aides.
This later escalated into a confrontation between Yusuf and Bichi after an exchange of angry words between them.
Bichi was said to have threatened to ensure that Yusuf did not board his flight.
Yusuf was reportedly banned from boarding an Air Peace flight headed for Abuja before he was arrested.
A source said: “DSS DG’s wife actually ordered the arrest of New Nigeria People’s Party Kano gubernatorial candidate Abba Yusuf and barred him from boarding an Air Peace flight from Kano to Abuja on the fateful Sunday night. .
“The problem began at the gate of the VIP lounge of the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, when the politician’s motorcade caused traffic that delayed the Bichi convoy’s entry into the controlled area.
“The action really angered Bichi when his security guards started beating people and vehicles for blocking the VIP gate.”
However, all efforts to contact the spokesman for the NNPP candidate, Sanusi Dawakintofa, were unsuccessful as his line was disconnected.
DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya confirmed Yusuf’s arrest.
He added that he was arrested for an alleged security breach and was kept in custody.
“He is in custody. He was validly admitted for an alleged security breach,” Afunanya noted.
