As the semi-finals of the InterswitchSPAK National Science Competition draw to a close, there are nine contestants left in the race for the crown as the best Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student in Nigeria.

The student who emerges first will win the grand prize of N7.5 million in scholarships for a period of five years, a new laptop and a monthly stipend. The second place winner will go home with a N4 million scholarship spread over a three-year period, a new laptop and a monthly stipend.

The third place winner gets a N1 million scholarship spread over a period of one year, a new laptop and a monthly stipend.

It is interesting to note that these students emerged from more than 20,000 students who took the national Crux computer-based test (CBT) last year to compete for bragging rights as the top STEM student in the country.

Preparations for the grand finale are in place and excitement is running high as fans of the show anticipate some fierce and enthusiastic competition among the unusual mix of contestants left in the race.

While the girls have reached the final in previous seasons of the competition’s 4-year run, this season has the highest number of female finalists, including Precious Akinyemi from Rhema Chapel International School, Oyo State, Joyce Onubogu from British Spring , Awka , Anambra; Towoju Atinuke from Seolad International College, Ogun State; and Orevaoghene Whiskey from Top Faith International School, Akwa Ibom State.

Other finalists equally competing for the grand prize include Zulqarnain Abubakar of Apt Scholars Universal College, Ogun State; Chimdubem Duruji of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State; Oraibi Okari from Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Rivers State; Adesayo Elumaro of The Ambassadors College, Ota, Ogun State; and Stephen Nwaneri from Adedokun International Schools, Ogun State.
