Humphery ‘Gabe’ Gabriel is set to make his Taiwan Super Basketball League debut on Saturday when his Taiwan Beer Basketball Team takes on Yulon in the opening game of the 2023 season.

The Nigerian-born former US high school basketball star was recruited to the SBL after leading his side from Vanung University to the 2022 UBA Super 4.

Gabe, who came to Taiwan in 2019 after leading Extra Joss Fighters to the Cambodian Basketball League (CBL) title to study International Relations and Hospitality at Vanung University in Taoyuan.

After 2 seasons in UBA Division 2, Gabe inspired the Lions to promotion to Division 1 in 2021/2022 and in the first year in the elite division, Vanung was able to reach the last 4.

Taiwan Beer went on a 6-game winless streak after Gabe’s Draft, but went on to win two straight games last week in the preseason tournament.

“It will be a tough game, Yulon seems to be the strongest team in the league this season and we need to step up if we want to win this game,” Gabe said in his preview ahead of the upcoming game on Saturday.

Yulon defeated Taiwan Beer 70-67 in the preseason game on December 27, but the Bears rallied to defeat Changhua Bulili and Taiwan Bank in subsequent games to boost their morale ahead of the season opener.
