Some yet to be identified assailants have set fire to the Police Division Headquarters in Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, has caused tension and uncertainty in the Ihiala community.

The assailants in large numbers broke into the police premises and began shooting sporadically, thus scaring the police officers on duty, before setting the building on fire.

The motive behind the act could not be determined at the time of filing this report, and it was also unclear if the thugs left with police ammunition.

The casualty figures have not yet been determined, but it was learned that the fire destroyed the building, property and official documents.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement.

Ikenga said: “Our operatives in the early hours of today 12/28/2022 confronted some armed men who attacked the Ihiala police division headquarters and recovered an abandoned Ak47 rifle. The gunmen escaped from the place due to the superior fire of the police agents, and no fatalities were recorded.

“Unfortunately, the explosives that the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already started a fire and affected the building.

“The operation is still ongoing in the area, further details will be communicated.”
