Details have emerged regarding the motive behind the alleged suicide of Joseph Olona, a level 300 student at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA.
The DAILY POST has reported that Joseph, a student in the Department of Industrial Design whose body was found hanging in his room on Saturday, was his department’s Financial Secretary before his death.
It was said that he committed suicide in his off-campus accommodation after he was allegedly depressed over issues related to finances.
According to Enoch Omoniyi, a close friend of the deceased, the issue is not unconnected with the sum of N100,000, which turned out to be departmental dues kept at his expense when the institution resumed for the 2021/2022 session.
Enoch, a next-door neighbor of the deceased, claimed that Joseph collected the dues on behalf of the department’s treasurer who was not present to receive the payment.
According to him, problems started for Joseph when the department chair asked him to send him N100,000 for a department project.
Joseph was said to have sent the money through a digital bank app identified as Carbon, which the president did not receive, even after the digital bank debited it.
He stressed that the situation took a huge toll on the deceased after the bank failed to respond to a series of emails about the transfer, adding that the incident caused many to shut him out.
Emphasizing that Joseph did not attend lectures after the Christmas break due to pressure, Enoch gave a timeline of the deceased’s last 24 hours.
His narration: “Yesterday morning, I went to get my phone from Joseph because his phone is faulty and we both share my phone. He informed me that his HOD called his dad and said that he was involved in fraud. He was very disturbed by that. He asked to follow me to my office in the Student Union Building (SUB) because he didn’t want to be left alone. I dropped it off at the office to attend the welcome event held at the TI Francis Auditorium and also watched the Awopegba game.
“When I returned to the office, he had already closed the office door. He gave me the keys again and left. When I got home, I forced him to eat. At 7:40 pm I knocked on his door but he didn’t open it. I left, thinking that he was still mad at me for leaving him in the office. At 8:30 pm I called again but there was no answer. At 22:01 I tried again but got no response and went to sleep.
“This morning, I went to knock around 8 am but there was no answer. I had to go look through his window and I saw him hanging from the ceiling.”
