B.behind The success story of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is a creativity czar, Professor Mohammed Haruna, Executive Vice President and CEO of the agency. He has recorded several notable achievements that have intervened in various sectors of national development.
Notable is the establishment of the Muhammadu Buhari Innovation and Technology Complex in Abuja, with state-of-the-art equipment; successful launch of NASENI Solar Energy Limited (NSEL), which manufactures solar modules and related components; ongoing projects on the establishment of transformer manufacturing plants; high voltage laboratory; development of unmanned aerial vehicles and food processing machinery for agricultural purposes; electronic voting solution to curb bad electoral practices; the recovery of tractors nationwide; innovative modular irrigation system; and the adoption as well as the domestication of future production technologies, such as virtual reality, the application of artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, CAD/CAM and additive manufacturing.
Worthy of note was Professor Haruna’s bold response to the COVID-19 pandemic, where he spearheaded the development of the first Made-in-Nigeria ventilator, 3D face mask and automatic environmental disinfectant spray machines.
NASENI, under the supervision of Professor Haruna, recently partnered with Israeli, Japanese and Nigerian companies for the production of Nigerian-made electric vehicles in the near future.
It also signed an agreement with China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) to establish a world-class transformer production facility in Nigeria.
Visiting Professor at Nigeria’s Nile University, Professor Haruna has a PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano and a second PhD and MS in Entrepreneurship from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology ( JKUAT). Nairobi, Kenya.
He is a member of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering; a Chartered Engineer of the UK Engineering Council; registered member of the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN); Fellow of the UK-based Institution of Engineering and Technology; member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and member of the Nigerian Solar Energy Society, among others.
With varied publications in national and international journals, the author of three renowned textbooks, and remarkable wit as well as proficiency in science and technology, Professor Mohammed Haruna is the recipient of The Sun Public Service Award 2022.
