Alex Iwobi looks set for a long period on the sideline after he was taken off the pitch during Everton’s FA Cup clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford after picking up an ankle injury.

The Red Devils recorded a 3-1 victory over the Toffees to advance to the fourth round of the competition.

Former Arsenal ace Iwobi, 26, sprained his ankle following a nasty challenge from Tyrell Malacia on 47 minutes. The Toffees midfielder put his hands over his face as he walked off the pitch visibly emotional and in pain.

Everton captain Seamus Coleman immediately called doctors to attend to the midfielder.

“Alex Iwobi has just fallen on his ankle and the ankle has gone in,” Alan Stubbs said on BBC Radio Merseyside.

“I hope he didn’t have ankle ligament surgery because it looks like that. “The momentum of the Malacian challenge has rattled his ankle. It’s going to be one where he’s shaken up and he’s okay to go on or he won’t be able to go on and he might be out for a few weeks.” After being treated on the pitch, Iwobi was replaced by Abdoulaye Doucoure, who received a standing ovation from the traveling Everton supporters.
