The Nigerian team has become the first African team to qualify for the curling event of the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Nigerian Curling Federation President Daniel Damola confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for the mixed and mixed doubles events.

According to him, Nigeria’s qualification for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games was secured after the country became the only participating team from Africa at the World Junior B Curling Championships held in Finland.

He said that the qualification ticket and official notification will be sent to the Nigerian Olympic Committee in March 2023.

“Well done Team Nigeria youth curlers for making history again by becoming the first African nation to qualify for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games. We are proud of all of you and the men’s team as well. Still we rise,” declared the delighted boss as he shared the encouraging news.

Fresh off the revealing outing in Lohja, Finland, where they played on ice for the first time, alongside the world’s best teams, the newly groomed Nigerian junior curlers have been tipped to ruffle feathers on ice for years to come.

“The beauty of all the success is that we made the dream come true with the locals, the athletes back home and the kids on the base. Mr. Daniel said.

“This is something that changes the lives of all of them and basically also the country. For us to achieve this historic achievement using only young athletes at home, the first of its kind in the entire African region. I am content and happy. I am happy with the staff and management, from housekeeping to the presidency. It is a team success and I thank God for everything”, he added.

The president of the Nigerian Curling Federation, while noting that recent successes are due to personal sacrifice and there has been no government sponsorship, said more can be achieved if the Federation gets the necessary support.

“Regardless of the fact that there is no support from anyone; Government, NOC or sponsors, we did it. That means if we had sponsors, you can only imagine what we would have accomplished. As I always say, we are still moving up in Nigerian curling.”

The 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Gangwon Province, South Korea, from January 19 to February 1.
