Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Strasbourg
Kylian Mbappe scored his fourth high-risk penalty in five days by converting from the penalty spot in the 96th minute to avoid PSG’s blushes at the Parc des Princes against 19th-ranked Strasbourg.
PSG struggled to bring Strasbourg down even after Marquinhos opened the scoring for them on 14 minutes. What was expected to be a procession by the mighty Parisians quickly turned into a scramble as Strasbourg equalized early in the game. second half through a Marquinhos goal on the wrong side this time.
As PSG battled it out against Strasbourg, they were hit hard when Neymar received two yellow cards and then his marching orders in a hellish two-minute performance. He received a yellow card for assaulting an opponent, and then picked up a second yellow and red card after the referee judged him to have dived into the penalty area.
Even with 10 men down, PSG kept knocking on the door and finally got their reward when Mbappé won a penalty and was presented with a late chance from the penalty spot to rescue them. As with France in Qatar just a week ago, Mbappé kept a cool head and beat Matz Sels in goal to give PSG all three points in the death in a match that should have closed sooner.
Clermont 0-2 Lille
Guinean striker Mohamed Bayo came on as a 91st-minute substitute in Lille’s 2–0 win over Clermont and managed to get on the scoreboard in the 94th minute to wrap up Lille’s ninth win of the season.
Bayo’s goal against his former club Clermont might have dominated the headlines, but Lille’s win ultimately came down to the brilliance of former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes.
Gomes, who is still in the running to represent the Nigerian Super Eagles, was in exceptional form as he won and converted a penalty and terrorized the Clermont defense as part of a Man of the Match performance.
Brest 2-4 Lyon
Elsewhere, in Ligue 1, an inspired performance from Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette helped Les Gones to a resounding 4-2 victory over Brest.
The former Arsenal striker scored from the penalty spot and provided an assist as Lyon marked their return to league action with a convincing victory that moved them to eighth in the table.
Maxence Caqueret opened the scoring for Lyon after just 21 minutes, but Brest put it back through Mathias Pereira Lage shortly after.
Lyon retook the lead through Rayan Cherki and doubled their lead thanks to Lacazette’s penalty before Brazilian striker Tete added some sparkle to make it 4-1.
Brest pulled one back through Benenoise striker Steve Mounie but was unable to mount a real counter-attack.
