Former Italy forward, Antonio Cassano, has described Victor Osimhen as the fit striker in Serie A, but believes Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez has more quality than the Nigerian.
Osimhen is having a great campaign with Napoli, which has seen the Serie A giants top the 20-team league table.
The 24-year-old Nigerian international’s display caught the eye of the 40-year-old Cassano, who has played for Italy and a host of Serie A clubs including AS Roma, Sampdoria and Inter Milan.
When asked to compare Osimhen to Inter’s Lautaro Martínez, Cassano insisted that Martínez was one step higher than the former Lille player.
“If we talk about form, obviously Osimhen is the best in the league. But in terms of absolute quality, the strongest is Lautaro Martínez,” Cassano told Bobo TV.
“If I had to choose between the two, I would stay with the Argentine, who is very strong, has quality and moves well.”
Osimhen is the top scorer in Serie A, with 10 goals and two assists in 13 games.
Osimhen, who opened his scoring account in a 5-2 win against Verona on August 15, 2022, made 27 Serie A appearances for Napoli last season, scoring 14 goals with two assists.
Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Martinez has scored eight Serie A goals in 17 games.
Osimhen will hope to be back on the scoresheet when Napoli host Juventus in a league match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Friday.
…The strongest striker of the Eagles in Serie A
ex juventus Midfielder Raffaele Ametrano has called Nigerian international Victor Osimhen the strongest striker in Serie A.
Osimhen has been a success since he made the club’s record-breaking transfer move from Serie A after joining Napoli in 2020 for an initial €50m plus add-ons.
Despite suffering various injuries and other related problems since his move to Italy, the 24-year-old has established himself as one of the most feared forwards in the league.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s Serie A clash between Napoli and Juventus, Ametrano in an interview with TuttoNapoli admitted that Osimhen was not an easy striker to mark.
“Napoli have the strongest center forward in our league, Victor Osimhen,” Ametrano told TuttoNapoli.
“He is a player who tires you to the point that you lose the decisive meter. Even in the match against Sampdoria he showed his speed.
“It is not easy to mark Osimhen. He arrives with impressive clarity in the penalty area with the work he manages to do.
“If he manages to have physical and mental continuity, he will score many goals between now and the end.”
Since joining the Parthenopeans, Osimhen has amassed a total of 5,430 minutes in 78 matches. He has scored 39 goals and registered 12 assists.
However, he will be hoping to add to his goal tally when Luciano Spalletti’s side take on Juventus in a battle for supremacy in Serie A.
A win for the league leaders will give them a 10-point lead at the top of the table.
