As the nation waits for President Muhammadu Buhari to approve the Nigerian Peace Corps Establishment Bill, The Organization signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, on Tuesday with a UK-based Training and Development Company ASQ on the commencement of training for its staff.
Addressing reporters on the development, National Corps Commander Prof. Dickson Akoh stated that the UK-based company’s ICT instructors would set up centers in all six geopolitical zones of the country to enable the company to carry out carry out effective training of staff to be able to face the challenges that lie ahead.
The first phase of the program, which focused on training in digital literacy, was launched after the approval of the MOU between the two organizations.
Professor Akor signed on behalf of his organization, while Mr. Samson Adeosun endorsed the document on behalf of the UK-based company.
Akor explained that of the more than 187,000 members, between regular members and volunteers, no less than 15,000 have already registered for the training.
He noted that while most of the staff were university graduates from different disciplines, equipping them with digital literacy skills would certainly prepare them sufficiently to fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s core mandate.

“However, for our part and as part of building the capacity of our members for strong, effective and efficient service delivery, we have taken some far-reaching steps to adequately prepare our officers and men for the challenges in anticipation of the eventual approval by Mr. President of the bill to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps, which will give legal backing to the organization.
“The MoU signed with ASQ Development and Training Company will allow the company’s ICT instructors to establish centers in the six geopolitical zones of the country in order to train our members in their respective zones.
“As you know, this organization has a well-structured network of offices in all the states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as offices in more than 94% of the country’s local government areas with a membership of more than of 187,000, which is made up of regular members and volunteers.

“Most of these are university graduates from different disciplines. Therefore, equipping them with digital literacy skills will certainly prepare them enough to fulfill their responsibilities when it comes to our core mandate.
‘However, ASQ Development and Training Company consultants, when executing the MoU, are required to put our members through rigorous and intensive in-house three-day lecture programmes, while the remaining part of the training will be conducted virtually.
“Thereafter, the company is expected to provide a web-based training platform for our officers and men to acquire essential basic skills and certifications in information technology to enhance human capital development across all professional sectors.” , he emphasized.
Akoh explained that the training would begin this weekend across the country and that the courses would include introduction to computer information technology, introduction to working with computers and devices, introduction to working with software applications, introduction to Internet, networks and basic concepts of networks. and introduction to the cloud.
He added that the training will also include introduction to computer programming basics, introduction to data-driven basics, introduction to artificial intelligence basics, and introduction to robotics.
The National Commander praised the company for identifying with the Corps’ value-based initiatives designed for the socioeconomic empowerment of the country’s youth.
