One person was killed and eight others injured in an accident at Ukpo Junction, along the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka highway.

The road accident involving two vehicles, a Toyota/Hiace commercial bus with registration number JRV 616 XA and another Toyota/Hiace commercial bus with registration number JJJ 179 XS, occurred on Wednesday night.

The vehicles were carrying 14 people, four adult men and six adult women, including one boy and three girls. Five people escaped unharmed.

According to an eyewitness, one of the tires of the bus with the registration number JRV 616 XA pulled while it was in motion and resulted in a collision with the oncoming bus.

Acting Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps Margaret Onabe confirmed the accident in a statement on behalf of Anambra State Sector Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi.

Onabe said the victims of the accident were rushed to Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, where the doctor confirmed that one person had died before depositing them in the morgue.

He added that others were receiving treatment after receiving first aid from the detail nurse at the FRSC aid area, Nteje.

“Anambra State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, took pity on the family of the deceased victim and sent his prayers to the injured.

“He warned motorists to desist from speeding and improper overtaking, especially in this festive period when the road is very busy. Drive to save lives on our roads,” she added.
