Men from the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspects for allegedly trying to kill a policeman and setting a tow vehicle on fire at the scene of an accident.
The event occurred on Saturday, December 31, when the suspects; Olayiwola Basiru, Bamimore Isiaka and Soliu allegedly tried to kill the policeman and burn the police tow vehicle.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that Police Sergeant attached to the Traffic Section of Owode Egba Division Headquarters, Akinpelu on Sunday, was appointed to rescue the victims and recover the vehicles involved in the station.
He said the thugs wanted to set the vehicle on fire to prevent the cause of the accident from being investigated.
Oyeyemi said: “…but upon arrival at the scene, the suspects attacked the policeman and the driver of the tow vehicle with sledgehammers, clubs and other dangerous weapons to prevent them from taking one of the vehicles involved to the station for further investigation.
“The police officer and the driver of the tow vehicle managed to escape the scene and rushed to the station with varying degrees of injuries.
“Divisional Police Officer, Owode Egba Division, CSP Olasunkanmi Popoola, when prodded to, led his men to the location where he met the suspects who had already poured gasoline into the tow vehicle and were about to set it on fire after withdraw the cash sum of N520. ,000 belonging to the driver of the vehicle.
“Three of the thugs were arrested, while others escaped, but their remaining gasoline was recovered.”
PPRO said Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole has ordered those who escaped to be hunted down and brought to court.
He added that the commissioner had ordered the arrested suspects to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible prosecution.
