Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has expressed his delight at returning to footballing action in Ponferradina’s 2-1 win over Villareal B in the Spanish Second Division game on Friday.
Nwakali suffered a blow to his right leg on 26 November during Ponferradina’s 1–0 loss to Málaga in a Spanish Segunda B match and was substituted in the 57th minute of the match.
The 24-year-old Nigerian midfielder has made a quick recovery and was in action for Ponferradina as he came on for Erik Morán in the 59th minute and played a fantastic game for Deportiva at the El Toralin Stadium.
“Starting the year off right +3 and it feels good to be back,” Nwakali tweeted after the match.
The former Huesca player has made 17 appearances for Ponferradina and has scored one goal and two assists for Ponferradina in all competitions this season.
Nwakali was also voted best Ponferradina player in the first half of the 2022/2023 season after his brilliant performance.
La Deportiva is eighteenth in the Spanish Second Division table with 24 points in 22 games.
The former Arsenal youth squad joined SD Ponferradina in July 2022 after his contract with LaLiga side SD Huesca was terminated amid controversy for playing for Nigeria at AFCON 2021 in Cameroon against the club’s wishes.
At the 2021 AFCON held in January 2022, Nwakali played for Nigeria as a substitute in the first and second group matches against Egypt and Sudan before starting in the final group match against Guinea- Bissau and was substituted in the 76th minute of the game. the game Nigeria won 2-0.
