Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has taken a jab at All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, saying Nigeria’s presidency is not “one step at a time.”
Speaking on Monday when he arrived in Delta state for his campaign, the former Anambra state governor explained that if the presidency was to be a turn-by-turn, it would be his “turn” to succeed the president, Maj. Gen. Buhari (ret.), this year.
“Someone said that it is his turn to be president, I want to tell you that the president is not turn by turn. If it’s turn for turn, it’s supposed to be my turn, but we’re not using turn for turn. It is Nigerians turn to be president, especially those full of energy.
“No tribe buys cheaper bread or rice, no religion buys cheaper bread. Vote for commitment and ability.
“We are not going to make excuses. I’m not going to remind you where you came from or blame people for their failures. I assure you that a new Nigeria is possible.
“Hold me responsible if we fail you in the area of security, economy. We will make the country work again. There will be no more strikes in the education sector in this country,” Obi said.
The former governor also lamented that the Niger Delta region was backwards judging by the resources accumulated in it. He promised to change the region if he was elected president.
He said: “We have gone to Warri, Isoko, Agbor and Asaba just today, that shows our seriousness and commitment, and everywhere, people came in droves.
“The Niger Delta is supposed to be a refuge, things are not working out in the region. It is assumed that from here to Warri it is dualized. The East-East highway has been built for the last 24 years, but nothing works in this region.”
