No fewer than seven people were confirmed dead on Sunday, while 16 others were injured in an accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus and a Mack tanker truck just meters from Gofamaint on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.
Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun, Mr. Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to reporters in Abeokuta.
Umar said the accident happened at 4:10 pm and was caused by the bus driver speeding, who lost control and rammed the tanker truck from behind.
He added that 25 people participated, of which 17 were adult men and eight adult women.
“A total of 16 people suffered varying degrees of injuries (10 adult men and six adult women), while seven people died from the accident (six adult men and one adult woman), and two others were uninjured.
“Two vehicles with registration numbers AKD 693 XW, a Toyota Hiace bus and GZA 215 XA, a Mack tanker truck were involved,” it said.
The FRSC chief explained that the injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere for medical attention, while the deceased were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara.
The sector commander advised motorists to avoid speed, saying it kills faster than anything else.
He also warned against driving while tired, saying that “it’s just as dangerous as drunk driving.”
Umar asked drivers to always rest for 15 to 30 minutes after a four-hour drive.
The head of FRSC sympathized with the family of the victims and advised them to contact FRSC Ogunmakin office for more information about the accident.
