There was concern among the police when strong indications emerged on Saturday that an elite team from the Ogun State Police Command approached the gang that carried out the gruesome murder of a couple, Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye and their son, Oreoluwa.

Our correspondent deduced that one of the two main suspects arrested in connection with the New Year’s Day murder of the former Central Bank of Nigeria worker, his wife and son had escaped from police custody.

An online media platform had reported that a Felix living with the Fatinoye family had raised the alarm that he recognized the couple’s driver, identified as Lekan, who was allegedly involved in the family’s murder.

Felix had reportedly raised his voice when he was taken to the riverbank where Oreoluwa drowned, accusing Lekan, who was the late wife’s driver, of being involved in the dastardly act.

Our correspondent deduced that Lekan was quickly arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

A police source told our correspondent that police had two suspects in custody until Friday when one of them escaped.

The source, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, said Lekan mysteriously escaped custody.

However, it was deduced that the police had launched a manhunt against Lekan and other suspects traced to the incident.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Police in the state, SP, Abimbola Oyeyemi, declined to comment.

When asked if the allegation that one of the suspects had escaped from custody, Oyeyemi declined to comment.

Other findings showed that police officers have fanned out to the nooks and crannies of the area in search of the fugitive suspect.

Meanwhile, the image of Lekan attached to a message asking the public to join the search for his whereabouts had gone viral.

Our correspondent saw a copy of the message which he claimed came from the police.

The message titled “Wanted” read “this is the guy suspected of being part of the culprits who murdered a couple in Abeokuta on New Year’s Eve.

“His name is Lekan. He is currently on the run and has been declared wanted by the police. Anyone who knows or sees him is asked to contact the nearest police station. He kindly share.”

The couple were killed by the assailants in the early morning of January 1 at their home in Ibara GRA shortly after attending a cross service at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta.

They were later burned beyond recognition.

Her son was thrown into a river along Adigbe in Obada-Oko, where his remains were recovered three days later.
