A non-denominational lobby group, The Christian Conscience, has urged political party candidates competing in the upcoming general election to avoid bitter politics and demonstrate a high level of discipline and political skill.

The group urged the contestants to remember that the entity, unity and holiness of Nigeria supersedes each individual.

This was contained in a statement co-signed by the group’s National President, Ms. Yetunde Akinluyi; and the National Secretary, Rev Kolawole Verrals, speaking to The PUNCH on Sunday.

“When our political gladiators follow God’s will and avoid bitter politics in their campaigns, their followers will follow suit,” the statement said.

It added: “The behaviors of party members are often drawn from the body language of their respective political leaders, therefore, when the behaviors of said leaders suggest violence or life and death, such conduct flows in the veins of their followers.” .

Congratulating Nigerians on the New Year, the group called for modest conduct, prayer and vigilance that God’s will continue to govern the country’s affairs.

In conclusion, the group urged the regime of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.), to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and the safety of life and property before and during election periods.
