A level 200 student from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, identified simply as Daniel, was shot dead while trying to retrieve his phone from armed robbers at his accommodation.
It was deduced that the deceased was from the Philosophy Department of the institution.
According to the sources, the incident occurred on Sunday night as Daniel was dragging his phone with the armed robbers who broke into his accommodation.
A witness said: “Daniel obediently handed over his phone to the armed robbers but asked for his SIM card. The thieves agreed to give her his SIM card.
“One of the assailants, who was holding an already corked pistol as he struggled to remove the phone from a tight package to give him Daniel’s SIM card, mistakenly pulled the trigger. In the process, Daniel was shot in the stomach.”
The source said that Daniel was rushed to the hospital, where he gave up the ghost due to excessive blood loss.
Confirming the incident, Anambra State Police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said the police had intensified patrolling and surveillance in the area.
“This is unfortunate, I received this information last night from the president of the SUG. The police patrol has been active ever since. I urge the witness to the incident to help us with information to investigate, please,” Ikenga added.
