Three people were reportedly killed and eight others injured when a speeding Toyota Corolla rear-ended a taxi on the Ile-Ise Panu axis at the Abeokuta end of the Lagos-Abeokuta highway.

Our correspondent deduced that both vehicles were headed for Abeokuta when the accident occurred at 7:30 am on Friday.

The impact of the accident destroyed the Nissan Micra taxi labeled AKM590YQ, while the engine compartment of the Toyota Corolla with license plate LND618FQ was damaged.

Ogun State Traffic Enforcement and Enforcement Agency public relations officer Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident.

Akinbiyi said an eyewitness account indicated that the driver of the Toyota Corolla lost control of the car due to speeding and rear-ended into the taxi as the passengers tried to get out.

He added that at the time of the incident, there were 11 occupants in the two vehicles, four men and seven women.

He said: “According to an eyewitness account, both vehicles were on their way to Abeokuta when the driver of the blue Corolla car, due to excessive speed, lost control while in motion and rear-ended the Micra taxi, while the passengers in the taxi were getting out of it. At the time of the accident, five passengers were in the taxi while six were in the Corolla.”

Akinbiyi said the bodies had been deposited at the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, while the injured had been taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.

He said that while TRACE and police sympathize with the family of those killed, they are warning motorists to avoid speeding.
