In recognition of their advancements in service to humanity and the nation, the United Nations Center for Positive Livelihoods Awards has recognized and honored selected Nigerian women with a peace award.

UN-POLAC is an autonomous international institution with a mandate to enhance the effectiveness of the UN Millennium Development Goals and UNESCO’s Culture of Peace Programme, in particular the maintenance of peace and security and the restoration of human dignity.

Held at the Nigeria National Merit Award House, Abuja, in commemoration of the celebration of World Humanitarian Day 2022 and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the event saw the recognition of eminent Nigerians who they have distinguished themselves for their service to humanity and the nation in general.

British American Tobacco Director of External Affairs, West and Central Africa, OdiriErewa-Meggison, was honored as “Distinguished Woman of Peace and Honour” and received the Queen Amina Heroin Award.

Other awardees include; Dr. Beauty Oladejo, Chief Medical Director, Hospital Pérez Medicare, Lekki; Rev. Mrs. Okafor Esther Ngozi, wife of Apostle Victor Chinwuba, founder of Crusaders Evangelical Ministry Worldwide; The Honorable Ms. Joy Iwuchukwu, Vice President, Aba North LGA, Abia State; Hajia Zara Mohamed Sule; Dr. OfforDianaroseIyeoma and Rev. SR. DR. Ernestina JK Edoziem.

Reacting to the award, Odiri said: “I am particularly proud of the nature of this award, and I hope it inspires young women alike to remain dedicated to their passion and act as shining lights wherever they are. African women, for as long as I can remember, constantly strive to be the best at everything they do, alternating crucial roles in family and society.

“It is inherent, therefore, that in contributing to the growth of our nation, while we achieve great deeds and feats, we must also ensure the promotion of peace, as development can only occur when there is peace,” he said.

In his keynote address at the event, UN POLLAC Deputy Director, the Honorable Peter Ohagwa, affirmed that UN POLLAC’s commitment to achieving its objectives, which include contributing to peace and security, as well as promoting the objectives of the United Nations in maintaining peace in communities, as well as ensuring collaboration between groups and individuals, remains sacrosanct.

The prestigious Queen Amina Heroine Award category recognizes women who have shown uncommon courage and strength in the face of adversity to achieve success, while the Distinguished Women of Peace and Honor Awards honor the work inspiring women whose encouragement, leadership, and commitment to peace stand out. as beacons of hope for young women.
