The Indigenous People of Biafra have insisted that they did not ban burial ceremonies in any part of the southeast, contrary to suggestions circulating in the region that the group had banned burial ceremonies on certain days.

A circular has been circulated in some communities in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State and some parts of Imo State, allegedly issued by suspected members of the Eastern Security Network, outlining a ban on burial ceremonies in certain days.

The circular, which came out immediately after Yuletide, said: “ESN has ordered all villages in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State, which includes Amorka, Uli, Okija, Mbosi, Ubuluisiuzor, Isseke, Ihiala City, that there will be no burial ceremonies until after January 15, 2023. Any family that disobeys the directive, the oldest member of the family would be beheaded.”

This has created a lot of tension and panic in these areas, as the families who have already arranged the burial ceremonies within the mentioned period are nervous and running haphazardly.

But responding to the situation when asked by our correspondent, on Sunday, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said that ESN did not issue any order to stop burials in any community, but that the pro-Biafra group only He requested that the town should be burying its dead on time, instead of leaving corpses in the morgue.

Powerful said that those who issue such directives in the communities of Anambra and Imo states are sponsored criminals and cultists recruited by government agencies to demonize IPOB to the public.

He said: “We wish to state unequivocally to one and all that ESN has not issued any order to stop burials in any community, but IPOB has requested that the dead be buried on time.

“Again, ESN does not have camps in Orsumoghu, Okija, Uli, Ubuluisiuzo, Mbosi, Lilu, Amorka, Ihiala Iseke, Orsuihiteukwa, Nnewi South and all those areas.

“IPOB has been saying this in solidarity in most of our press releases, which clearly indicates that we do not have a camp in these areas. Biafran enemies created and sponsored criminals camping in those areas while linking ESN to their criminal atrocities.

“Anyone who links IPOB and ESN operatives to the crimes that occur in these areas is only doing the job of a blackmailer and agent provocateur.

“We have always called on the Nigerian military and their brother security officers to stop linking IPOB to criminal activities in the south-east. Biafra will come and they will regret fighting this innocent movement.

“The international community fully understands the Biafran self-determination movement and will never be fooled by the false anti-IPOB propaganda being spread.

“Sponsored criminals issuing useless orders that no burial is to take place until January 15, 2023 in some communities around Anambra and Imo State are not members of IPOB or ESN.

“They are criminals and cultists recruited by some government officials. ESN or IPOB members cannot give such inhuman orders. IPOB has exceeded issuing such an ignorant order. They just want to tarnish IPOB’s reputation and image.

“The communities mentioned above must not allow themselves to become vulnerable in the hands of these criminals posing as ESN. The aforementioned communities must reason together and find a way to get rid of these criminals. ESN and IPOB volunteers will support them and help stop criminals if the communities are willing.

“Nobody should be allowed to continue using the name of ESN and IPOB to commit any crime against our people. IPOB and ESN are here to protect our people and not to punish or harm them. We are warning those who commit crimes using IPOB and ESN names to stop or be prepared to face serious consequences this year.

“Our leader, Mazi Nnamdi KANU, has separately said that he wants peace in all the states of Biafra Land. Our land was peaceful before and must remain so until Biafra comes. ESN and IPOB-DOS did not give any stupid order that no one should bury their loved ones until January 15, 2023, instead IPOB is encouraging our people to bury the dead on time.”
