Iran plans to accept more female students from Afghanistan after the Taliban banned women’s education in the country, local news platform IRNA reported on Tuesday.
IRNA reported that Iran has increased the budget of the University of Tehran for scholarships for Afghan students five times.
A Tehran University official said this would allow Iran to support more Afghan students, especially women, in 2023.
Currently, 470 Afghan students, almost a quarter of them women, study at the University of Tehran.
More than half of these students have scholarships, the official added.
Following the closure of universities for Afghan female students by the Taliban, Iran announced that it was willing to provide special facilities for Afghan female students.
Women and girls were largely excluded from public life in Afghanistan.
Iran is also a Muslim country whose Islamic law is repeatedly criticized. Women in particular face systematic disadvantages in the Islamic Republic.
Iran has also come under international criticism for its brutal crackdown on protests across the country, with women leading the riots.
The Islamic Republic has a modern education and higher education system, and the majority of students enrolled in Iran are women.
