A PUNCH journalist, El-ameen Ibrahim, and 29 others have been announced as successful fellows of the Countering Misinformation and Promoting Media Literacy Project, organised by the International Centre for Investigative Journalism with the support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja.
Ibrahim, who works at the Abuja Bureau office of The PUNCH was selected for the project which aims to reduce the dissemination and impact of misinformation in Nigeria by promoting media literacy and responsible information sharing among citizens.
Others are Alo Olaronke from the British Broadcasting Corporation, Ojo-Ehinmodu Adeola from the National Broadcasting Commission, and Ogi-Olu Damilola, from Arise News, among others.
In the last five years, the project has worked to build the capacity for hundreds of journalists to undertake investigative, data-driven reporting, thus strengthening accountability and engendering effective service delivery for the welfare of the citizens, particularly at the sub-regional level.
In an official correspondence obtained by our correspondent, the organisers said, “We have carefully chosen 30 journalists from various Nigerian media organisations to participate in the project, which commences with a three-day capacity-building programme to be held in Abuja in October 2023.
“This programme aims to enhance their skills and offer financial support, enabling them to produce critical fact-checking content. Ultimately, our objective is to promote responsible journalism and elevate Nigeria’s overall quality of information.
“Following their training, these journalists will be responsible for conducting similar training sessions within their respective media organisations, ensuring a sustainable impact among their colleagues and fostering a ripple effect of knowledge dissemination.”
