Gunmen attacked a convoy of a former Imo state governor, Ikedi Ohakim, on Monday, reportedly killing four of his police officers in the process.

The convoy was said to have come under attack in Oriagu in the Ehime Mbano local government area of the state on Monday.

Ohakim, who narrowly escaped, was attacked in his backup vehicle, killing all four policemen.

Our correspondent deduced that Ohakim was with two of his children and was returning from a visit when the gunmen attacked.

A source close to the former governor, who did not want to be named because he has not been authorized to speak to reporters on the matter, “His Excellency was the main target but his driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him.

“Disappointed that their primary target had escaped, they blocked their backup vehicle and burned it. The four policemen who were with him were burned.”

Our correspondent deduced that the reinforcement arrived from Owerri, the state capital, and accompanied the ex-governor to his home.

Ohakim, who appeared sober, confirmed the attack to our correspondent by phone.

Efforts to get a reaction from state police spokesman Michael Abattam were unsuccessful as he had not yet returned calls made to his hotline at the time of filing this report.
