Morocco’s investment in the sport has translated into its latest victories in international competitions.

Morocco had beaten Portugal to become the first African to participate in the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup.

Morocco stunned the world when they defeated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal 1-0 on Saturday to become the first African or Arab team to qualify for a World Cup semi-final.

The Atlas Lions will face defending champions France in the semi-final for a place in the final.

The Moroccan club is champion of the CAF Interclub Competitions, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup. The ASFAR women defeated the champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa to win their first CAF Women’s Champions League.

Atiku has said that he will build soccer fields in various public places across the country.

The former vice president revealed this at Sunday’s presidential debate, saying he will encourage children to get involved and participate in sports activities.

He said: “What you find in Morocco is that they have provided soccer fields in almost every neighborhood. In every neighborhood you go to in Morocco, small towns, cities and towns, you find that they have provided public soccer fields.

“You will see primary school children playing football early in the morning before going to school and later at night when they come back from school, I think we have to encourage that.”
