Mozambique hosts Benin in the final qualifying game for the AFCON. Two points separate the two teams, so it is a winner takes all six-pointers. Both teams will be hoping to qualify for their fifth-ever AFCON in what is set to be a full-blooded affair.

Mozambique to make it 2/2 vs Benin and book their place at AFCON

Maputo plays host to a monumental winner-take-all tie between Mozambique and Benin.

The Mambas currently sit second in the group with seven points from five games. Benin are third with five points, so only a win is good enough for the Cheetahs to qualify.

Mozambique are currently ranked 117th in the world, 24 places behind Benin in 93rd. However, in the reverse fixture, Mozambique were victorious, claiming a 1-0 win against the odds.

While Mozambique lost both games to heavy favourites Senegal, Benin managed a point against them. Gernot Rohr’s side were also handed a 3-0 victory away at Rwanda due to the hosts fielding an ineligible player, but were also held at home to Amavubi. Mozambique also took four points off of Rwanda.

Due to home advantage and the fact that Mozambique were victorious in the last meeting, we expect the hosts to emerge victorious and secure their fifth ever AFCON appearance.

Catamo to score yet again

In the 1-0 victory for Mozambique at Benin, Geny Catamo was the hero for the Mambas. The 22-year-old scored after 38 minutes to tip a tight game in Mozambique’s favour. The Sporting winger also scored the opener in the 2-0 win over Rwanda.

With two goals in three AFCON qualification starts, Catamo is Mozambique’s most prominent attacker. After a loan spell at Maritimo last season, the 22-year-old has forced himself into the reckoning at Sporting Lisbon this season, impressing off the bench in three appearances as well as starting the season opener at home to Vizela.

Catamo will be Mozambique’s biggest threat, and legendary manager and ex-international Chiquinho Conde will be hoping for some magic from the talented youngster to drag his side over the finishing line.

Tight, cagey, low scoring encounter expected

The expectation and anticipation in both participating countries will be massive heading into this game, and this pressure may have an effect on the players.

Mozambique has seen GG land two of five games in AFCON qualification thus far. The Mambas have only scored five goals in their five games. Isac De Carvalho is the current squad’s top national scorer with six international goals. This showcases the weakness Chiquinho Conde’s side displays in attack. In their last 24 competitive games, GG has only landed in eight games for Mozambique.

So far in AFCON qualification, Benin have scored six goals and conceded six goals in five games. GG has landed in three out of these five.

However, out of their last 20 competitive games, only five have seen GG (20%), with Gernot Rohr Pohr preferring to stay defensively resolute while also struggling to score goals, with only veteran strikers Stephane Sessegnon and Steve Mounie scoring more than eight goals for the national team.
