Angry father and son on Tuesday fell heavily on a doctor and nurse at the Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta after losing a family member.

Our correspondent deduced that chaos broke out around 2:00 am Tuesday in the hospital emergency room shortly after a 53-year-old patient died.

The president of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State Chapter, Dr. Kunle Ashimi, while briefing reporters, condemned the attack on two of the medical workers by the husband and son of the patient who died of heart failure. .

Ashimi said Dr. Pelumi Somorin was the doctor attacked while the identity of the nurse had not been determined.

He explained that father and son slapped the doctor while announcing the death of their family member.

According to Ashimi, a 53-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with a severe form of heart failure who herself after all investigations, including those she brought from the referring center, showed that it will take more than a miracle for the woman to survive.

“In other words, she was in the end stage of heart failure. This was explained to her relatives when they took her to her center but, nevertheless, we also believe in miracles and feel that we must do everything possible to see what can happen.

“It has happened before that another person in this type of condition improved with proper care.

“But unfortunately, this particular patient gave up around 2am and the deceased’s husband and son descended on the doctor who had been treating the patient when news of her death was announced.

“The doctor received a slap from each of them and later they descended on her and only the people around her saved her.”

“A nurse was also assaulted by these people.”

The president of the association pointed out that the police were alerted to the incident and added that, despite his presence, the son continued with the assault.

“Police were appropriately called and the DPO from Kempta Police Station led the police team to the scene.

“Despite the presence of the police, the deceased’s son assaulted a nurse and all efforts to calm him down were unsuccessful.

“The duo was finally taken to the Kemta police station, where their statements and those of the doctor, the nurse and the assaulted witnesses were taken”.

However, the NMA president has warned Nigerians to desist from assaulting healthcare providers and vowed that anyone found guilty will be brought to justice.

“We have decided that this will be the last and we will not stop at allegations. We have decided to take the case to court and we will be in court tomorrow.

“All legal procedures have been started and we will take this case to court.

“We want to appeal and warn all those who use hospital services in Ogun State that the Nigerian Medical Association, as well as its affiliates and each individual doctor, will not accept the term ‘sorry’ from now on. . from anyone who assaults any of our members.

“We will do our best to prosecute such people and will not accept pleas from anyone, no matter how high the person’s position is.

“Therefore, we implore anyone who has the mind to think that they might be able to beg us later to please plead with the population. It’s not our fault.

Ashimi stressed that assaults against medical personnel have become a global problem that has yet to be resolved despite various campaigns to curb the threat.

He said that “globally, this is an issue that has been ongoing and various campaigns have been mounted around the world against violence and assaults that bring down health workers.

“Particularly at the Federal Medical Center, Abeokuta, Ogun State and other hospitals around Ogun State which are under our own jurisdiction as the Nigerian Medical Association.

“We have mounted several campaigns against this event in the past and after many pleas, we have had to plead with our doctors to accept an apology from those who attacked them.

“Things like this are not slowing down. In fact, this happens very often in emergencies.”
